Behind the Lens

Fog drifting through the forested ridges of East Tennessee at first light.

I'm Tim McLeod, a photographer based in Knoxville, Tennessee, focused on the wildlife and landscapes of the southern Appalachians. I'm drawn to the moments when light, weather, and landscape come together, and capturing the special moments is about being there when they do.

Most of my images come from early mornings in the Smokies, the Roan Highlands, and the quieter nooks of East Tennessee: fog on the balds, water moving through a gorge, and the wildlife that calls these mountains home. Now and then I travel beyond Tennessee, but this is home, and it's where nearly all of this work is made.

Every image on this site is available as an archival print, produced by a professional photographic lab and made to last a lifetime under normal display conditions. If one of them reminds you of a place you love, or shows you a corner of Tennessee you haven't seen yet, I hope it finds a place on your wall.
